There was king in Prussia, A GermanĀ state. Fredrick the great. He wanted people to adopt Potato and eat it beside wheat as source of carbohydrate because it will make price of bread less volatile and lower the risk of famine.
But they were very reluctant. He tried making it compulsory. In fact there have been record of people being executed for refusing to grow potatoes.
The Prussian peasantry(Farmers) said they look pretty disgusting and we can’t even make dogs to eat them. Also 18th century Prussian ate very little vegetable.
So he tried new approach. The marketing approach. He declared potato a royal vegetable. Only royal family could consume it and he grow it in royal patch with guards who had instruction to guard over it day and night but with secret instruction not to guard it very well.
But 18th century peasants knew that there is one safe rule in life which is if anything is worth guarding it is worth stealing. Soon there was large scale underground potato growing operation in Germany.
What he did was, he rebranded the potato.
